The Quest for Authentic Manhood is a teaching series that enables men to understand masculinity from a biblical perspective. This series was developed from lectures that Dr. Robert Lewis originally gave for the organization Dad, the Family Shepherd. You will notice references in this presentation to Dad, the Family Shepherd, and see men in their late 30s and 40s in the audience. The original material was designed to be presented to fathers and their sons. However, the material in its present form has been found to be highly relevant to college-age men. The series format that you may order from Integrated Resources (1-800-729-4351) includes two video tapes and an audio CD. Alternately, the series may be purchased from Fellowship Bible Church during business hours at 1-501-224-7171. FBC also sells a 12-audio cassette version.

About the Speaker
Picture of RL from the back coverDr. Robert Lewis is a teaching pastor at Fellowship Bible Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. He also gives leadership to the Men's Fraternity, a group of 700 men who meet each Wednesday morning to discuss issues related to spirituality and masculinity. Robert's undergraduate years were spent at the University of Arkansas where he played football. He came to faith in Jesus Christ at the beginning of his college career and was actively involved with Campus Crusade for Christ as a student. Robert and his wife, Sherard, have been married since 1971 and have four children.

About the Series
It is our belief that the difficulties that many men experience in life come out of a lack of bondedness with others and a lack of connection to God. Throughout this series, men are presented with the message that they can experience a changed life through a relationship with Jesus Christ. The Quest for Authentic Manhood is developed to be used in seven 90-minute sessions. The first four sessions are on videotape. Sessions Five through Seven are recorded on compact disc. The seven sessions are:

Session One- "The Manhood Maze" (Video 1, Part 1)
Session Two- "The Call to Authentic Manhood" (Video 1, Part 2)
Session Three- "Manhood Maps" (Video 2, Part 1)
Session Four- "Wounds Men Must Resolve" (Video 2, Part 2)
Session Five- "Five Remedies for the Father Wound" (CD, Track 1)
Session Six- "The Importance of Having a Mentor" (CD, Track 2)
Session Seven- "Increasing Your Manhood Vision (CD, Track 3)

Inside the packet you order will be reproducible notetaking outlines for all seven sessions.

For More Information: This series has been developed to help men live godly lives. Thousands have already been impacted by these materials, and it is our prayer that you will also be challenged and changed as you go through this series with other men. If we can assist you in any way, please contact us via a regional facilitator.

How to Use the Series
In putting together a group to go through The Quest for Authentic Manhood series, there are several things to keep in mind:

Environment: You will want to find a place to meet that is quiet, comfortable and free from distractions. (This study has been used very effectively when men are able to meet togetherVolleyball for 30-45 minutes prior to the sessions to play basketball, volleyball, or some otherbball group activity together. Church gyms or activity centers can provide both of these environments, (if other groups are not using the facility at the same time). You will know best what provides this environment for your men. Be creative.

Participants: Participants in The Quest for Authentic Manhood picture of a small group 1should be aware that the series is seven sessionsguys watching the video 1 in length and that is it important to attend all seven sessions. They should also be informed that each session is 90 minutes, which includes opening remarks, the video or audio presentation and small group discussion.

David facilitatingFacilitator: There should be one person who can serve as facilitator for the series. That person will take 5-10 minutes each week to welcome people, talk about the purpose of the current session and to review some of the principles learned from the previous week. The facilitator will also be responsible for ensuring sessions begin and end on time. If you have questions about how to facilitate the series you may contact a regional facilitator via e-mail or phone if additional assistance is required.

picture of a small group 2Content:The first four video sessions are approximately one hour in length followed by 30 minutes of small group discussion. Audo sessions 5 through 7 are 20-40 minutes in length followed by approximately 40-50 minutes of small group discussion. (Note: Threre might be a tendency to cut the last three sessions short. Becuse the final three sessions deal with wounds that many men have experienced, there has been more time allotted for sharing and discussion).

Following each video, participants will break up into groups of 3-5 men to discuss what they have learned and how it applies to them personally. It is helpful if an older student, Bible study leader, or person who has gone through the material before serves as a facilitator for small group discussion. He focuses conversation toward discussion questions and ensures everyone gives input. In addition to the small group time, the large group facilitator to may want to allow a few minutes for discussion at the beginning or end of each session.

Comments about the Quest for Authentic Manhood

"This series has brought me from a life of boyhood and passivity to a life of manhood and direction."
Eric - Western Kentucky University

"This year at school I have been able to "step up" and help fill a leadership vacuum at our university. I have gotten a lot more involved and I am presently leading a Growth Team. Learning about the need to reject passivity and to take on leadership roles was one of the main things that I learned
this summer in The Quest For Authentic Manhood."
Theo - Penn State

"This series has been a tremendous blessing and will shape the future direction of my life. I am starting to have a passion for what it means to be a Godly man."
Dan - James Madison University

"This series and the accompanying activities were awesome. I hope to go through The Quest For Authentic Manhood with my father and brother."
Jon - University of Virginia

"The Quest For Authentic Manhood series enabled me to "step up" and actively seek what God has for me. The Authentic Manhood wasn't as much training me to be a man as it was instrumental in a paradigm shift for my life.  Rejecting passivity and accepting responsibility has led to innumerable
blessings from God."
Tony - Arizona State

"I am encouraged to write my Dad and tell him how awesome he is and what a great job he has done as a father."
Thatcher  - Westchester University

"This series was just amazing! Dr. Lewis has so much insight about what it takes to be a real man. It's not about being a "macho man". It's about serving God and other men."
Joo - University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

"I learned that becoming a Godly man, a real man, is not something that is done naturally. Authentic Manhood offers a clear Biblical definition of who God calls a man to be. It provides a blueprint on how to become the man God has designed you to be."
Justin - University of Kentucky

"The information about rejecting passivity and accepting responsibility spoke to my heart. The Quest for Authentic Manhood showed how my past has affected who I am, and how to work through the issues of woundedness to become a real man."
Stephen- Louisiana State University

"My relationship with my Dad has affected the way I view myself and God. This series allowed me to come to terms with the wounds that I have encountered and practical ways to resolve them. I have also received great direction for the future in becoming the man God has called me to be."
Chris - University of Georgia

"I was challenged to live a life that was in the likeness of a real man. I considered my self a man before, but this really helped me to track my steps. It is a better road map on how to be a more Godly man. It all made sense and I am applying it to my life right now."
Tom - Westchester University
